Post 2: Striving To Be The Best

In life, there are times when individuals are bent against their will.  When all attempts to free themselves prove to be futile, many people suppress their ambitions and bring their lives to a pause.  Sadly, many high school students are afflicted with this curse.  They complain that they don’t want to be at school; so they blow off their days drawing stick figures on uncompleted math tests and bubbling happy faces on all their scantrons. On the other hand, I strive for excellence, even though I dislike school just as much as the next guy.  Abraham Lincoln once said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.”  If you have to be a student, be a good one.

Why would anyone want to waste 12 years of their life twiddling their thumbs, and getting scolded by teachers for not doing their homework? Public education binds us until we graduate high school, so we might as well use the opportunities to learn something; you never know when it could come in handy. For example, academic success can positively influence job and college acceptances.

Lazy people are notorious for doing “half jobs”, because they apply minimal, if any, effort on their daily chores. Thus, in their profession, lazy people perform in the lower 50th percentile, and get fired by their employers.  Would you want a doctor that barely squeezed through medical school, or the one that graduated at the top of his/her class?

I hope this serves a wake-up-call to all of those who blow off anything productive. You have nothing to lose by trying to reach your full potential, but you have everything to lose when you don’t apply yourself.

  1. Aha! I suspected, but now I know it to be true...this blog is really an outline for the self-help book you plan to write in the future!

The straightforwardness of your post makes it fun to read. It is better to b good at what you're doing than bad at what you're doing...this is not only applicable to students, but teachers as well. So many teachers go through the day chanting the curriculum as if it were psalms, never thinking to expand upon the state-set guidelines, neither exciting nor interesting the children they teach. On the flip side, there are also teachers who will add the elements of one subject in a relatable way to their own, who will manipulate with inventive strategies to gain their students' interests.
Your outlook is refreshing; quality of information overrides quantity of information :)

  2. Your style is exquisite! And your use of language is very effective to portray your ideas across the page of your website. :) The thoughts you stated as, "wasting 12 years of your life......twiddling your thumgs," are absolutely true! I feel that students aren't truely students or even close to "good students" unless they apply themselves. They are wasting multiple opportunities to get ahead in life and they don't realize it.....or maybe they just don't care. It's a shame, but I'm glad you pointed it out and finally told the world how it really is perceived by the rest of us--the ones that actually don't wast our time in school.

  3. Ahaha, unknowingly you have quoted Mrs. Goode when you said "Would you want a doctor that barely squeezed through medical school, or the one that graduated at the top of his/her class?" so perhaps you have two quotes in one post? Well, I love your writing style and flow. As others have commented on, your writing has a calming and intriguing feel that attracted the reader to continue reading and wanting more then they're done. Your topic for this post is inspirational and should be followed by most(if not all). Good post :)

  4. Good for you for casting some good old fashioned common sense out into the world! You repeatedly restore my faith in the human race :) It's so true that the vast majority of kids don't take advantage of a compulsory education which is too bad because some day they will wake up in their parents' basement or box and wonder how their life has seemingly been flushed down the drain. Of course it's better to wake up later than never but had they just tried their best in high school, they would have the opportunity to get into a decent college and make a real living. This is why I try to create as many opportunities as possible by working hard. No regrets; just do it.

  5. First of all, just wanna say I like how you described the "average high school student" that blows off school to draw pictures, because it is actually true at times. We all should be trying our hardest to be the best that we can be. You only go through high school once in life so why waste your time not doing anything when you can work your hardest and be successful in the future? People never actually realize this before it is too late and their chances are already up. So set up your ambition and dreams first to be inspired to strive with the best possible attempt that you can give. The better the try, the more accomplished one can be.

  6. This is something every American citizen should take into account, whether they are students or employees, when one gets into lazy habits, they are developing lazy lives. And in modern times, our economy isn't going to get better soon so to live well one must have an education of some sort -college is recommended haha. Good post :)

  7. There is no point in doing something that you do not love doing. Just like you said in your post, going to school may not be something that everyone might want, but since we are forced to go, we might as well learn something while we're there. There is probably a huge chance that we as students can regret not paying attention in class. What we learn in high school can affect how we view life forever.

  8. Well, if your going to be a janitor you should strive to be the best at it. And that's not a joke. Life occurences place many people to many situations and whatever situation a person might be placed at, their is no reason to half ass whatever responsibilities come with it. Why be a janitor at McDonalds when one can be a Janitor at a high end, five-star, luxury hotel.

  9. While there is nothing wrong with putting effort into things, putting effort into something you have no passion for will leave you with a pit of dissatisfaction that will slowly rot away at you until you are a mere husk of a human that goes from one day to the next with no purpose.
