Post 1: Learning From Mistakes

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

Our everyday actions are sparked by the question, “What happens if…?”  That phrase is the foundation for advancement, and it dates back to the time when we were cavemen. Someone had to wonder, "What happens if I rub two sticks together?" and "What happens if I use the resulting flame to heat up my meals?" Thousands upon thousands of these questions have been asked, and it has allowed us to become the most dominant species in the world.

Curiosity is an innate characteristic that is present in every human being. The degree of curiosity is what differentiates us. Some individuals shun curiosity, because they fear it may result in an uncomfortable position; but it is those situations that mold our character, and level of success. Those that hide from opportunity, and never venture outside their comfort zone will lead mediocre lives at best.  They won’t be able to withstand any sort of change, and will only thrive in a structured environment.

In my life, I try to explore a variety of fields, and I try to become competent in them through the use of experimentation.  Whenever I am confronted with a dilemma, I will persistently pursue the best way to overcome it.  With repeated experimentation, I can learn what works well, and what doesn’t, in any situation.

I also believe one can learn a lot from others’ actions. By analyzing their critical mistakes, it allows one to gain wisdom, without the pain that is associated with it.  That is the chief reason schools nationwide require students to study their country’s history.  They want us learn from our nation’s past mistakes, and not repeat them when we get old enough to vote.

Therefore, I say embrace your forthcoming mistakes and learn from them, because as Emerson says, “…The more experiments you make, the better.”

  1. Great first post, I love your insight to Emerson's quote! Going back to "Some individuals shun curiosity, because they fear it may result in an uncomfortable position; but it is those situations that mold our character, and level of success," many feel that they cannot succeed in a new field so they do not try to save face for themselves. For this reason, we have to be kind and let others know that it is ok to try and make a few mistakes. I look forward to your next posts! :)

  2. In the 2nd paragraph, "but it is those situations...." is that grammatically correct? do you mean to say,"but those ARE the situations...."? I'm not sure, maybe I'm wrong :P Anyways, I love the way you can control the language to make even these sometimes difficult-to-grasp-concepts, easy to fully conceive. It made me feel as if you truly have had plenty of experience and experiments which have made you better. Your vocabulary isn't elementary, but is still easy to understand. When you went ever-so-slightly off topic, it still felt like you were on topic, which is great....it felt like a type of reference. Thanks for your excellent perspective, which you put excellently in your own voice.

  3. Its a lovely approach to life :) Much more hands on and pragmatic that living in a bubble like so many people do. Their ego makes them too afraid of the possibility of imperfection or danger. This is why I hate the phrase, "Curiosity killed the cat"; without curiosity I bet there would never be a cat XD I agree with Genevieve: nice flow that keeps me reading.

  4. Bravo. Straight to the point, clear and a good flow. Very difficult to disagree with this post (and if anyone does I am sure they don't like change haha). Very true, in our lives one will face obstacles and confusion but you emphasize that this position is natural and one must embrace it. Our lives must be diverse and dynamic, it should never be a set schedule because then one isn't living at that point. Just like Schrödinger's Cat, if one thinks but never act one will live in wonder forever and as humans, perfection doesn't exist so one shouldn't be afraid to commit mistakes. Therefore keep experimenting. Looking forward to your next post :D

  5. Woah, you got that asianswag flow! Curiosity+mistakes+uncomfort+imperfection=fulfillment :D Life's already hard...no use making it dull as well. "With repeated experimentation, I can learn what works well, and what doesn’t, in any situation," that's my favorite part! It could be the title of a self-help book for sure :p

  6. It is true that life is created by the compilation of questions and actions. We should all be a little more outgoing in order to fully embrace all that life has to offer. I suppose one could follow an initial question with "Why not?", however, not many people are like that. Most tend to stay inside their boundaries content with the little bit of life they claim to live. Very interesting post, keep it up Asiaku!

  7. Very well written. Everything we are surrounded by now is a result of our curiosity. I find that i always ask myself "what happens if.." or "why does this happen.." I also try to find a variety of different solutions to a problem and pick one that works the best. Experimentation is the best way to go!!!
