Health is something many people take for granted. It is
appreciated when one is sick or injured; but once the sickness subsides and the
injuries heal, we are quick to forget how valuable our health really is. Seneca
says, “Health is the soul that animates all the enjoyments of life, which fade
and are tasteless without it.”
Whenever I’m afflicted with an illness; Congested airways, sore
throats, and fevers make it very difficult to function. It makes it pain-staking to produce any
emotion besides self- pity, and it can make even the most pungent foods, such
as oranges, seem bland. Being ill makes me feel as if I am peering out of a foggy
window, only to be clear up when the sickness dissipates.
When I broke my right arm in the 8th grade, I felt
significantly handicapped. I had to do everything
with my non-dominant hand. Simple things such as brushing my teeth and putting
on clothes became a hassle. I was
frustrated with my pitiful state, and realized without my health, I would be
nothing. Life seemed to fly past me, and
I felt cemented to the cast on my arm.
That’s why I am lost for words when I see people abusing
their bodies. Many people poison
themselves with junk food, and watch TV all day; As if watching sports would
help burn off their excess fat. If that lifestyle is upheld, organs may stop
working. And as a result, those individuals would have to be connected to a
breathing machine for the rest of their lives. Wouldn’t that make life “tasteless”?
If you don’t take care
of your health, you may find yourself on crutches or getting a heart
transplant. Thus, try to maintain a healthy
lifestyle, and don’t jump off your roof to prove you’re a badass; for “Health
is the soul that animates all the enjoyments of life.”
I love your descriptions in your post! I can feel the frustration and pity in your writing when you describe the time when you broke your arm. "Thus, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and don’t jump off your roof to prove you’re a badass; for “Health is the soul that animates all the enjoyments of life,”" just made me laugh, because I know so many people(usually guys) who do some of the most thoughtless acts ever for no reason at all except to do it. Good post, you should keep posting :)
ReplyDeleteThrough your own personal expirience, and I've seen a similar example with my brother, the picture is really clear and it's true; we always take things for granted until we are close of losing it or when it is too late. This has to change soon, especially in the U.S. where we have a growing epidemic and struggle with obesity. Great post :D
ReplyDeleteYour vocabulary was very captivating in your piece. I can see now through your personal experience how having limited mobility affects the enjoyment in life. When people do illegal drugs, it affects them as well. I just hope they learn sooner than later because when one sees the lifestyle they're living, and it's disgusting then they try to make a change. Nice way of adding badass, it was a fun read.
ReplyDeleteI see exactly what your saying. People do stupid things to their bodies all the time and it frustrates me greatly to see perfectly healthy people destroy themselves. What a waste. I'm very conscious and protective of my health, sometimes to protective because I can sometimes worry to much. But I would rather be a little worrisome than not care at all. This was a great post, good job :)
ReplyDeleteIn recent years health of the American people has become quite a popular subject. New measures imposed by the government try to make people aware of what the are doing and eating such as the extensive warnings on packages and the postings of calories on meals in restaurants. Nice job.
